Values is a powerful program that helps teams and organizations develop their own uniquely-focused set of guiding values. The Values program supports the organizational and personal job alignment emphasized in the Performance Mastery System and can play an important part in setting expectations as learned in the Symphony program. The values become actionable as participants collectively identify and agree upon the supporting behaviors. Values will help your organization:

  • Identify and explore each participant's most important work values
  • Better understand the individual perspectives of each of its team members, resulting in better teamwork
  • Give team members a deeper understanding of the team's or organization's leader's personal values
  • Create a bridge between employee values and those of the organization
  • Establish and agree upon a set of collective values and beliefs that will guide both personal and team actions
  • Learn a methodology to explore the modification or creation of values for future work groups or teams

Program Description
Work teams, in groups of four to eight, gather at tables around a learning map and each team member is given a set of 54 Values cards and other materials for the workshop. Participants begin by sorting the Values in order of their importance to them as an individual. Participants share their sorts with the tables, helping each person gain insight into their teammates' value criteria, as well as their own.

The group then creates a set of the six most important core values on which they would like to anchor their team's work. This is accomplished through discussion and team consensus - not by voting - thereby producing a deeper understanding of the meaning and context of each selected value.

Based on this experience, each team selects six to ten organizational values. Then, each team discusses which behaviors they need to exhibit more, and which less, in order to fully realize the values potential. As an optional exercise, the leader may choose to share his/her personal top ten values to give the participants insight into their leader's own personal perspective. Participants leave the program highly motivated and with a new and shared purpose.

Implementation / Customization
Values is typically implemented in a three-hour session. It can be run for groups as small as four and as large as 400 or more. One program option allows managers who have experienced Values to obtain the necessary materials to take their teams through the workshop "back on the job." Another option, which involves automated voting, polling, and ranking systems to accelerate the capture, analysis, and presentation of information, is available to support large group implementations.
